Appliance (VM or bare-metal)

OSUbuntu 22.04 or 24.04 LTS (installed by ISO)
CPU2 vCPU minimum
RAM4 GB minimum
Storage20 GB SSD minimum · 40 GB recommended for production

Network prerequisites

  • At least one managed switch or Wi-Fi controller that supports 802.1X (RFC 3580)
  • A RADIUS shared secret configured on each switch/AP
  • VLANs pre-created on your switching infrastructure
  • Optional: an Active Directory, LDAP or Entra ID directory for identity-based policies
// Installation

From download to first authentication

Step 01

Download and boot the ISO

Download the trial ISO below. Create a VM or prepare bare-metal hardware meeting the requirements above. Boot from the ISO and follow the guided installation wizard. Note the IP address shown on screen when installation completes.

Step 02

Access the dashboard

Open https://[IP] in your browser. Accept the self-signed certificate or upload your own. Default credentials: admin / portguard — you will be required to change the password on first login.

Step 03

Activate your trial license

Go to Settings → License and enter your trial license key. Internet access is required for this step only. After activation the appliance operates fully on your local network.

Step 04

Connect your identity source

Go to Settings → Identity Providers. Connect your Active Directory, LDAP or Microsoft Entra ID directory. See the Entra ID guide or Admin Guide → Identity.

Step 05

Add your first switch

Go to NAC → Switches. Add your switch with its IP address and RADIUS shared secret. Configure your switch to point 802.1X requests at the PortGuard appliance IP on UDP 1812.

Step 06

Define an access policy and test

Go to NAC → Access Policies. Create a policy that maps an identity (user, group or device type) to a VLAN. Enable 802.1X on a test switch port and authenticate a device. Watch the result appear on the live dashboard within 2 seconds.
